To identify patients with neuropathic post-operative pain preliminary database searches looked for patients with codes for surgery followed by a record of post-operative pain, or surgery plus either a code for neuropathic pain, or neuropathy or persistent pain and a prescription for a specific neuropathic pain treatment (rather than general pain) initiated within 28 days of the pain record date.
Given the breadth of topics covered, question-specific refinements to the inclusion criteria were sometimes required after preliminary database searching and review; for example, to determine which clinical sub-categories of a particular disorder were most relevant.
