That both mechanisms contribute is consistent with stimulus dependent adaptation, provided cortical connections are made between neurons displaying different stimulus preferences (for orientation see [91]).
In tangential electrode penetrations across primary visual cortex one often observes systematic changes in the receptive field properties of neurons, such as their preferences for orientation and ocular dominance.
