In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that the precision grasp (uses only the tips of fingers and the thumb of one hand) provides better indices of G and L coordination in static manipulation tasks than two bimanual grasps (palm palm and fingers thumb; both using opposing segments of two hands).
A caveat concerned with this prediction is that if, as previously demonstrated, left-handers prefer to use the non-dominant hand to perform precision grasp tasks, then this area should be more involved when the left hand is used.
Further, if the suggestion that left-handers are more likely to use the right than the left hand to perform precision grasp movements [8], [9], therefore violating handedness, then we may expect the left hand to behave less dexterously than the right hand for this subjects' group.
For each trial, subjects were required to perform one of two actions upon the target object, following a delay period: 1) reach towards and precision grasp (G) the object ('Grasp' auditory command) without lifting and 2) reach towards (R) and manually touch the top of the object ('Touch' auditory command).
For experimental runs with the hand, grasping required the subjects to precision grasp the object with their thumb and index finger (Hand-G) without lifting whereas the reaching action required the subject to simply transport their hand to the object without hand pre-shaping (Hand-R).
Ten healthy subjects (8 women, 62.1 ± 8.8 years) reached and grasped objects requiring 3 different grasp types (can, diameter 65.6 mm, cylindrical grasp; screwdriver, diameter 31.6 mm, power grasp; pen, diameter 7.5 mm, precision grasp) in PE and visually similar virtual objects in VE.

The performance of the hand was accessed through testings using power and precision grasps.
Chimps, on the other hand, have much longer fingers and shorter thumbs, perfect for swinging in trees but much less handy for precision grasping.
Experimental studies are conducted and the experiment results show that the microgripper exhibits good performance and high precision grasping operations can be realized through the developed control strategy.
In addition, an embodied cognition factor was included where the symbols in the task were either shown with a precision grasping static hand or not.
