Early reports relied mostly on isolation of rickettsiae from tissue or fleas and serosurveys that did not necessarily provide accurate speciation of rickettsial isolates in the absence of precise molecular characteristics.
If alignment blocks are set to be short with longer intervals, the blocks would be frequently allocated to a single different genealogy, leading to the precise estimation of speciation times and population sizes.
Although the precise conditions for this speciation-like phenomenon has not been completely elucidated, it seems that a bimodal distribution can evolve when the advantage of producing P and that of producing M – which result from diffusion being finite – are sufficiently and more or less equally strong (see the legend of Fig. 9 for the parameter conditions).
Estimates of asymmetries in character change are not as accurate or precise as estimating rates of speciation.
