These include lost opportunity costs if the patient occupies a semiprivate room while on contact precautions and an increased risk for CDI among other hospitalized patients due to the patient's contribution to C. difficile transmission.
More recently, Huskins et al. (28) showed that active surveillance and increased use of barrier precautions had no significant effect on the transmission of MRSA or vancomycin-resistant enterococcus, again in an ICU setting, compared with standard hospital policy.
Dan et al. [ 12] estimated baseline intervention effectiveness rates of 50, 80 and 90%% as protective equipment (including masks) and isolation precautions were increased.
However, with heavy colonization of the insertion site, percutaneous insertion in the internal jugular vein rather than subclavian vein, catheterization for longer than 3 days, and insertion with less stringent barrier precautions significantly increased the risk for catheter-related infection.

Between baseline and intervention phases in screening and decolonisation wards, the proportion of audited MRSA carriers placed on contact precautions increased (from 81.1% to 90.7%), as did administration of decolonisation therapy (from 34.4%too 69.8%; figure 3).
