"She's practising, she's been training.
"The director of nursing got off and continues to practise," she says.
Maria was a lawyer," she says, adding with visible pride, "I don't believe, when she was practising, she ever lost a case".
She longs to be a ballerina, but rather than spending the holidays practising she helps her dad on his fishing boat.
We'd go to hers to practise, she'd let us stand in the bath and play to get the echoes.
People feel passionately about laying claim to what is rightly theirs, and as a lawyer it is a very stimulating area in which to practise," she says.
"I'm definitely happy I can play my best tennis at the beginning of the year, which is always tough after a few weeks just practising," she said.
P15: "They've just given her some words to practise, she doesn't say the endings of any of the words …probably because she can't hear them…speech and language can't sort her hearing out, they can just try and help her with pronouncing the words, but if she can't hear them then they're hitting their heads against a brick wall".
And she practised what she preached: during months at sea, she didn't throw a single item of rubbish overboard.
Many years ago, when she "practised baby-farming", she had cared for two babies, one "of low condition", the other "a regular patrician".
