Quantification of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and their spatial variations at regional scales is a foundation to adequately assess plant productivity and soil carbon sequestration potentials so as to establish better practices for land use and land management.
It constitutes a categorization of 'accumulation by dispossession' practices for land control made on the basis of the cases studied by the authors regarding the 2000 2010 expansion of the palm oil frontier in Colombia.
Besides 'productive alliances', the contemporary expansion of the palm oil frontier in Colombia has encompassed a variety of practices for land control that represent forms of 'accumulation by dispossession' as they result in dispossession of local people's access to land.
Each of the ten plan case studies was analyzed in detail to determine what it could offer as guidance on best practice for land use planning for natural hazards, in much more detail than was possible during the initial analyses.

The revised 1996 IPCC guidelines pre-date the development of the managed land concept as a proxy to anthropogenic emissions and removals that was introduced in the 2003 IPCC Good Practice Guidance for Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) [18], and incorporated into the 2006 IPCC Guidelines [9].
According to the IPCC Good Practice Guidance for Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry [16,17] accounting must include the five carbon pools: (1) above-ground biomass, (2) below-ground biomass, (3) deadwood, (4) litter and (5) organic soil carbon [18].
