Including all the factors of land costs, environmental protection requirements, and potential productivity increases, the IRRs were not that different among the Southern Cone countries (5.8% to 6.5%) and the US Pacific Northwest (6.0%), although the South still lagged behind noticeably (3.0%).
Another factor that could raise consumption is the potential for productivity increases in the other root crops (cassava and yams).
A healthier workforce also means lower premiums in future, alongside potential productivity boosts and increase morale.
However, there are some practical issues should be noted in this management intensification potential driven by the projected productivity increase.
First, new technologies increase our potential productivity and output as a society; because we are capable of becoming richer thanks to digital technology, the economic return to economically important social institutions, such as a government capable of enforcing private property rights, is rising.
This could lead to a major drop in productivity of these areas by 2050, along with a corresponding increase in potential productivity of many previously-unused areas, pointing to a major shift in the map of global food production.
These findings are significant because the input of icebergs to the Southern Ocean is increasing [11] and any accompanying productivity increase has the potential to enhance carbon export and provide a new negative feedback loop to mitigate fossil fuel emissions (but see [3, 12]).
That deters potential productivity gains.
