Numerous unsubstantiated explanations for this fault have been offered, such as early arrest of the Y cartilage and, more recently, a primary developmental failure of the posterior superior buttress of the acetabulum.
The most commonly accepted theory of developmental abnormality is a primary failure of proper formation of the acetabulum, particularly a germinal failure of development of the posterior superior buttress of the ilium.
