4) Positive framing ("message framing"), i.e., explanation that lifestyle changes can help to reduce the risk: translating the risk estimation into a positive message by explaining that the patient is able to change the risk.
We evaluated the following three ways of framing the information: 1. positively framed information showing gain over 10 years (positive framing for 10 years); 2. negatively framed information showing loss over 10 years (negative framing for 10 years), and 3. negatively framed information showing loss per year over 10 years (negative framing per year) (Figure 2).
This positive framing is more than cosmetic it begins from a position of agency (Tanner et al. 2014), which suggests that communities are not passive but rather are aware of their complex vulnerabilities more broadly.
A positive framing of uncertain information would indicate that losses might not happen if preventative action was taken.
When the researchers manipulated the framing of a story to be either negative (a person is injured) or positive (an injured person is "trying to be better again"), they found that the positive framing made a piece far more popular.
When I visited, they were focused on honing two of Lemov's techniques: "no opt out" – insisting, when a child gives an answer, that she repeat it until it is 100% correct, and "positive framing" – making critical feedback encouraging.
