To build GeoFaces, a large dataset of geolocated face patches, we downloaded geotagged imagery from Flickr [35] with face-related tags (e.g., face, portrait, men, family, friends).
Among the early works is a 1946 self-portrait, "Man with a Thistle", powerful and confident.
(He modeled his figure on his own portrait of the half-mad utopian-socialist Jean Journet, which was in turn based on popular prints of the Wandering Jew.) In "Self-Portrait: (Man With a Pipe)" (1846-47), he is the young bohemian, the urban gypsy, seductive and aware of it, with his slight smirk and half-closed eyes.
Perhaps best known for his experimental photographs and portraits, Man Ray, the leading Surrealist, also produced paintings as well as constructions out of everything from tin boxes to greeting cards.
This may in part be attributed to differing contemporary treatments of male and female portraits; men were allowed more individuality, while female portraits were bound by stereotypes and were not as daring, for example showing evidence of ageing.
