In a single origin, demographically expanding population, mismatches should follow a unimodal Poisson distribution whereas in populations at demographic equilibrium or with sub-groups, the distribution is usually multimodal.
For both DNA regions, significantly large Φst values and corrected between-population mismatch rates occurred between Bradyrhizobium populations isolated from different host genera, but not between populations isolated from different host species within a genus (Table 1).
When four buffalo populations were considered as a single population, the mismatch distribution curve was bimodal which suggests strongly population subdivision (fig. 2).
