The study faced significant challenges, including a heterogeneous patient population, difficulty recruiting subjects despite an international collaborative effort, and an inability to include a placebo-controlled design due to ethical concerns.
Obtaining accurate longevity estimates can be hampered by the low probability of catching older individuals as they represent a small portion of the entire population, difficulty associated with capturing large specimens that are more capable of escaping gear than smaller conspecifics, and the reduction of older individuals in the population due to fishing pressure (Bishop et al., 2006).
This study also identified a number of areas of potentially unmet need amongst this highly vulnerable population including difficulty affording medication, difficulty in accessing services in rural areas, poor medication management, social isolation and mental health issues.
