The distribution of operon characteristics (not their overall phylogeny) supports the existence of two superclades that we provisionally named Group 1 and Group 2. Group 1 contains compact, gene-rich men gene clusters, the co-localization of menF and menD, and contains menH, whereas Group 2 is defined by relatively gene-poor, dispersed (as in cyanobacteria) clusters.
Given the evidence that G. pyrenaicus is a poor disperser [36] and is already strongly dispersal-limited on the European scale, having failed to disperse to even relatively nearby suitable areas like the Alps, it is highly unlikely that the species will be able to track the shifting areas of suitable climate on a European scale (cf. [68]).
These studies suggest that over ocean dispersal in lizards is possible but rare, and these relatively poor dispersing abilities facilitate speciation in the absence of recent gene flow.
