Initial fruit set, measured 1 month after floral dehiscence, significantly increased in plants receiving supplemental pollen compared with open-pollinated flowers (pollination treatment P < 0.0001; whole model P < 0.0001, df = 5, AIC = 73.6, R = 0.33; Fig. 1).

The fruit set of Cox (Fig. 1a) was affected by pollination treatment with significantly greater fruit set following hand pollination compared to open pollinated blossoms (Z2,356 = 7.59, P < 0.0001) which in turn set more fruit than pollinator excluded blossoms (Z2,356 = 7.30, P < 0.0001).

In population BYS, pollination treatment had significant effects on fruit and seed production, although a significant interaction term between pollination treatment and habitat was detected (Table 3), indicating that the effect of pollination treatment on fruit and seed production was dependent on habitat.

Pan traps were used to assess pollinator communities and supplemental pollination treatments were used to evaluate pollen limitation.
Pollen limitation, defined as the difference in seed production between open pollinated (natural pollination with no supplementation) and supplemental pollination treatments, occurs when the average open-pollinated seed production is significantly less than the average seed production of individuals receiving supplemental pollen (Knight 2003).
A parallel 2011 experiment that included a self-pollination treatment and excluded seed predators found initial and final fruit set were higher in the self and outcross pollination treatments than in the open-pollinated treatment.
