You could consider setting a time limit on tablet use – although Flewitt disagrees with this approach, in case you interrupt your child at the point of the app's maximum benefit.
(How did this happen? Where did the time go, and why did I allow it to get away? Did I really need to answer those e-mails, read those tweets, make and drink those cups of coffee?) And this is essentially the point of the app.
First, the entire point of the app is to invite your friends to use it.

The whole point of the app is to, well, yap about TV, and not just with people you know.
You can't check other users' tweets from Birdhouse, because that isn't the point of the app.
The app sells for $0.99, but that doesn't give you access to the biggest selling point of the app: Turn-by-turn navigation.
(And keep in mind that recommendations are the point of the app, while swiping is just the way to get there).
And similar to Shopkick, the point of the app for those retailers is to actually drive more sales in the brick-and-mortar environment.
And that may be one big selling point of the app on the iPad over rival Foursquare, which isn't quite as pretty.
