"Small-business data is tough to come by, but point-of-payment experiences are very representative of how a small business conducts business," says Ida Wainschel, program director for Trade Exchange.
He's got small ideas to start, like the ability to split bills automatically between every Monzo user at the meal at the point of payment, but they're already very different from what the wider banking industry expects.
"Microcopy (the snippets of text we use to guide a customer through our website) is a key consideration at every stage," says Paul Williams, associate director of marketing and digital at Jelf Small Business, "but none more so than at the point of payment.
(For gig work, ratings are provided at the point of payment after the work has been completed; for full-time roles employers are prompted to rate hired workers "after a period of time" and vice versa).
Well, today the fintech startup is finally de-cloaking with a staggered launch of its multi-currency account, app and card that does indeed let you store your money in gold and convert it back to fiat currency at the point of payment.
That's because, argues Bialick, a sprawling fintech and financial services landscape means that we have more bank accounts and cards than ever, and while account aggregation isn't new or unique (indeed, HSBC's new Beta banking app lets you pull in transaction data from external bank accounts), on its own it doesn't solve fragmentation at the point of payment.
With Boku's new product, called Boku Accounts, the startup is expanding online mobile payments technology to cover e-commerce and retail point-of-sale payments.
For now, their workaround has been to send buyers to payment sites on their phones to authenticate point-of-sale payments — a solution, but a more time-consuming one.
That made priming them for other kinds of financial service, like point-of-sale payments, far easier.
To give a sense for the size of the index, last year the company processed more than $10 billion globally in online, mobile, and point-of-sale payments transactions.
