The Improving Medicine through Pathway Assessment of Critical Therapy in Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia (IMPACT-HAP) study was created in 2006 by a group of clinical investigators interested in healthcare-associated respiratory infections [ 4, 5].
We initiated a performance improvement project designated Improving Medicine Through Pathway Assessment of Critical Therapy in Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia (IMPACT-HAP) at four academic centers in the United States.
Inspired by the ATS/IDSA guidelines [ 1] and the desire to assess and improve outcomes in adults with HAP in the intensive care unit (ICU), we initiated a performance improvement project designated Improving Medicine through Pathway Assessment of Critical Therapy in Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia (IMPACT-HAP).
There are studies 20– 22 showing that bacteremia during MRSA hospital-acquired pneumonia impacts on the prognosis, and comorbid conditions such as malignancy lead to a poor outcome.
Pneumonia impacted all age classes with 27% (4/15) of 1-3 year old sheep, 35% (9/26) of 3-6 year old sheep and 44% (4/9) of > 6 year old sheep dying of pneumonia.
Although a negative efficacy value of -1.5% against the latter category may seem small, because more than 80% of estimated cases fall within the category of non-primary endpoint pneumonia, the impact on the aggregate population benefit may be non-negligible.
It has been suggested that co-infections with Streptococcus pneumoniae may impact the severity of the clinical presentation in patients infected with 2009 H1N1 [44].
To this end, sequencing of multiple genomes from S. pneumoniae to better probe the diversity of the pathogen and its pathogenic features is necessary and certainly will continue to surprise us with fascinating discoveries in the evolution of S. pneumoniae and impact on the clinical medicine.
