Taking his theme from the chorus at the end of the play The Cure at Troy, Seamus Heaney's translation of The Philoctetes by Sophocles, Farmer envisioned a utopian future that this year's graduates might bring about by their 20th reunion — a future of nuclear disarmament, a reconstructed New Orleans, quality health care for all, an end to torture and war, and a thriving Africa.
This was supposed to be the year a lifetime exclusion from N.C.A.A. tournament play was cured.
