Microsoft's platform group is creating the so-called Next Generation Windows Services.

The various Platform groups are filling the gaps left by depleted army forces, but their leaders are also acting in their own and their community's interests.

"The fundamental premise of NGWS is integration," said Charles Fitzgerald, the director of business development for Microsoft's platforms group.

"This marketplace is so broad and these devices are so unique," explained Keith White, senior director of Microsoft's appliance and embedded platforms group.

"The last major makeover for the PC happened in the early 90's," said William M. Siu, general manager of Intel's desktop platforms group.

"We should have a very good year next year, and by we, I mean the industry," said Jim Allchin, vice president of the platforms group for Microsoft.
