The layer of endometrium closest to the encroaching conceptus forms, with remnants of the invading syncytiotrophoblast, a thin plate of cells known as the decidua basalis, the maternal component of the mature placenta; it is cast off when the placenta is expelled.
In each of 11 cell lines tested, each plate of cells had an average of 94.5percentt beating heart cells.
After 6 h, each plate of cells was imaged by a live cell imaging system, which consists of a cell incubation chamber (IX3W, Tokai Hit), an epi-fluorescent microscope (IX-83, Olympus, with halogen lamp as the light source), a spinning disk confocal system (Andor) and an electron multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD) camera (Evolve 512, Photometrics).

Three mice were injected per cell line, each with one 6-well plate of cells.
