Public health practitioners have expressed a need for a single place where they can access reviews evaluating the effectiveness of interventions, have confidence in the methodological quality of the evidence, and access plain language review summaries with corresponding implications for policy and practice [ 20].

Information on trial funding source was reported in other locations less often, including another table (one review, 1%), a footnote in a summary of findings table (five reviews, 3%), the abstract (one review, 1%), the plain language summary (two reviews, 1%), and in the context of sensitivity analyses (six reviews, 4%) (table 2; see also supplementary appendix 4).
The largest producers of these structured decision-relevant summaries for reviews about health system arrangements are the DARE (n = 1,962, 90% of those with at least one summary) and the Cochrane Library through its plain language summaries of reviews (n = 505, 23%).

The development of this framework was informed by our earlier work on plain language summaries of systematic reviews [ 1] and work on evidence-based policy briefs [ 2- 4].
In Italy, Italian translations of selected plain language summaries of Cochrane reviews are available free to the public on the PartecipaSalute web site [ 6] and in the "SM Italia" journal of the Associazione Italiana Sclerosi Multipla (AISM).
Each one gets a serious review, written in plain language, with a dish-by-dish critique and some witty observations about the experience.
The user-friendly summaries are presented in a format that provides: (1) an outline of the topic of the review, a plain language summary and a bulleted list of key messages summary; (2) an outline of the benefits, harms and costs of the intervention, program or service evaluated in the review; and (3) relevant equity and local applicability considerations.
Each review has a Plain Language Summary (PLS), for those without specialised knowledge, and an abstract, which are freely available from The Cochrane Library (https://summaries.cochrane.org).org
The tools were also reviewed by a plain language expert and the interdisciplinary research team.
Several participants were positive to the fact that patients' information needs were being addressed in the form of the Plain Language Summaries they found in the Cochrane Reviews.
