asiaticus was named in 2004 based on Vietnamese specimens; associating with Khasi pine (Pinus khasya), it has small, dull brown, velvety fruit bodies.
These loci have an elevated nonsynonymous substitution rate (Table 3) and appear to have a substantial number of indels in Pinus, although it was not possible in many cases to confidently score indels in these loci due to the inherent limitations of reference-guided assembly of short reads in length variable regions.
Particularly over the initial period of Pinus establishment, it is possible that this mineralization of organic nutrients combined with high levels of C input may result in increased N and P availability to other plants, but this possibility has not been investigated.
This species has been found in Puerto Rico growing under planted Pinus caribaea, where it is thought to have been introduced inadvertently from North Carolina by the USDA Forest Service in 1955.
If the native forest could be restored, potentially by under-planting native Kunzea or Nothofagus trees before complete Pinus tree removal, it would likely be resistant to both exotic grass and Pinus invasion.
The pathogen occurs worldwide but is of particular significance in New Zealand where it infects Pinus radiata D. Don plantations.
The mushroom has also been reported from southern Brazil (state of Santa Catarina) growing in association with pine (Pinus elliottii) plantations, where it has probably been introduced with pine seedlings brought by settlers.
