GWAS allow researchers to pinpoint the genetic variations that are associated with susceptibility to complex disorders, such as bipolar disorder, coronary artery disease, Crohn's disease, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes [ 1].
Although linkage analyses have met with some success (Houlihan et al. 2009; Dick et al. 2006; Luciano et al. 2006; Posthuma et al. 2005), these studies lack power to detect common variation and have difficulty pinpointing the variant of interest (Balding 2006).
The goal of this study was to quantify reproducibility within and between profiles generated using ChIP-chip and ChIP-seq approaches, and to pinpoint the source of variation between the technologies, which ultimately should provide useful information for experimental design and data analysis.
That should help researchers pinpoint the tiny genetic variations that correspond with valuable traits.
Armed with this specific information, the farmer can investigate selected areas and pinpoint the reasons for the variations (soil compaction or nutrient imbalance, for example), quantify them in financial terms, and find out if it is economical to implement remedies.
