Additional analyses revealed a mediation effect of perceived difficulty on retention and transfer, that is learning with provided pictures decreased cognitive load and enhanced comprehension.
Whereas juice activations remained strong (22 of 31 neurons, 71%), the activations to the large and small pictures decreased and varied with picture size (10 and 3 of 31 neurons, 32%and10%0%; Figure 2B), suggesting context sensitivity.
Whereas juice responses varied unsystematically, the activations to both unrewarded pictures decreased monotonically with increasing separation from rewarding contexts, which enhanced neuronal discrimination (small picture versus juice; Note S3; Figures S2C and S2D).
