In the present study we aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of mid-regional pro-ANP levels in a well defined cohort of medical intensive care unit (ICU) patients as compared with those of other biomarkers (i.e. IL-6, C-reactive protein [CRP] and procalcitonin [PCT]) and a physiological score (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation [APACHE] II).

The following clinical data were collected: age; gender; worst and best vital signs during the first ICU day; Simplified Acute Physiological Score (SAPS) 3; first day total Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score; syndromic diagnosis; etiological diagnosis; comorbidities; ICU length of stay (LOS); organ support measures; clinical ICU outcomes; and highest lactate level of the first day.
