Further, physicians do not recognize patients' goals of care, which are more related to quality of life related than to physicians' goals of their living longer (weak evidence) [ 23].
There are also several proposed benefits from user participation in health care; extending services and making them more accessible, improving information [ 1], reducing medical errors, improving patient safety [ 2], improving the coordination of care in chronic diseases [ 20], improving clinical decision making [ 21], and improving alignment of patients' and physicians' goals and agendas [ 22].
The physicians' goal in the shared decision model is to empower families by helping them to understand what is at stake and, if they so wish, to share in the decision-making process.
