PARIS — Taking aim at so-called fake news, France's Parliament on Thursday is set to begin debating a tough bill aimed at repressing phony news items, one pushed by President Emmanuel Macron amid criticism that it poses a potential threat to press freedom.
He also, at the urging of the defendants, created phony documents stating the items were found on private property rather than on federal or tribal lands, court papers say.
This is known as "cramming," because these phony charges are "crammed" among many items on a monthly bill and may be hard to spot.
Officials recently created a national database in an attempt to track down the items, which range from fake olive oil to phony expensive wine, according to Cleveland local news station 19 Action News.
All told, the three rounds of cuts will reduce expenditures on these important items by 16 percent – a lot more than the phony 2.3 percent number that the Republicans tout.
But new bidders should know that auctions of all sizes, both live and online, may occasionally employ questionable practices like phony bidding, pretending works that don't meet their reserve are sold, and misrepresenting items in their catalogs.
