Phonographic Performance, a British music industry body that collects royalty payments for musicians, is planning to more than double the fees paid by pubs, bars and nightclubs to play recorded music.
"We looked at this and thought, 7 cents just doesn't seem right, when people are paying 10 to 15 dollars to get in and at least 5 dollars for a drink," said Stephen Peach, chief executive of Phonographic Performance Co. of Australia, which collects the fees.
Its founding members include the record label trade body the BPI, the Association of Independent Music, the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters, performing rights body the MCPS-PRS Alliance, the Music Managers Forum, the Music Publishers Association, the Musicians Union and Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL).
FACT reports that 19 unreleased Gorillaz songs now appear on UK music licensing database Phonographic Performance Limited, an organization that collects royalties from radio stations for record companies.
