The long answer, and you knew it would be a long answer, has to do with understanding jazz as a 100-year continuity, an art performed by great musicians from postadolescence until the ends of their lives; as a philosophy of memory and inscription, of appropriating and elaborating; and as a business that must lure new customers by appealing to what they've heard of.
