Now, a new study explores how petroleum, fire, and ice interact during oil spill cleanups and suggests that oil and (frozen) water do mix just not in the way researchers expected.

Benzene exposure, a by-product of petroleum fires, however, has been shown to have the greatest magnitude of association within the first 10 years of exposure (Richardson 2008) and was found to be elevated in air samples around the WTC sites (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2003).
