The influence on the PET performance due to MR operation was evaluated by acquiring PET data from different phantoms (point sources and structured phantoms) while applying demanding gradient and RF dominated stress tests as well as normal MR imaging sequences (SE, FFE, EPI and TSE sequences).
The main purpose of this study was to perform a direct quantitative comparison of PET performance, with main focus on PET image quality, between state-of-the art PET/CT and the later introduced PET/MR, using the same physical phantoms, same phantom preparation for image quality, identical data analysis and the same measurement protocol (NEMA NU 2-2007).

No significant changes of the PET performance and the homogeneity of MR images caused by the non-compatibility of PET-MRI were observed with the 2 different MRIs.

The characterization of the MR compatibility showed no relevant degradation in PET performance during MRI operation.
