The National Hockey League, which governs ice hockey in the US, has already specifically banned both Meerkat and Periscope including any live streaming up to 30 minutes before face off.
Each mention of Periscope included a mention of Meerkat, whether in news stories or in real-life discussion.

In addition to the landscape support, the Periscope iOS app update includes a few other tweaks, including a new "share indication" (the update appears in your home feed when someone you follow shares a broadcast), which will now include info on who shared a stream; improved accessibility features including VoiceOver; plus an easier way to turn off and on chat and hearts during a live broadcast.
Periscope's features include the ability for viewers to comment during the broadcasts, which in this case often included questions that the refugees could answer live and unmediated.

In addition, the live pre-game coverage will include Periscope broadcasts like player warm-ups and sideline interviews, designed to give football fans behind-the-scenes access to teams on game days.
Twitter's network and sub-brands, including Periscope and Vine could give it an edge over those other offerings, however, especially if it makes the experience easy and cheap for media organizations and other content providers to build into their existing websites and apps.
