In most cities, the roles of police and fire agencies are clearly delineated: the police perform law enforcement duties, and firefighters do rescue work.
The San Francisco Sheriff's Department, BART Police (public transit only), Amtrak Police, California Highway Patrol and many other local, state, and federal agencies perform law enforcement tasks in the city.
