A basic, general method to map, visualize, and evaluate perception and perceptual values is proposed.
However, our utility model is general enough to permit the replacement of these assigned utilities with values that better reflect the actual utility of the tasks, for example, by assigning utility based on perceptual values of video quality derived from human trials.
Thus, numerically deviant displays are inevitably deviants in comparison to the average of the distribution of perceptual values.

This was Fechner's insight: if perceptual value is correlated with discriminability, and discriminability of a fixed stimulus difference decreases with stimulus magnitude (Weber 1843), then the perceptual response must fall off with stimulus magnitude (Fechner 1860).
That the perceptual value of dot arrays, but not numerals, should fall off with stimulus magnitude is counterintuitive in our case since the hedonic value of any numerosity should be the same irrespective of whether it is represented by a numeral or dot array.
