To exploit the biological significance of the interacting networks in the enriched pathways, we compared the topological informational scores of the integrin family with the percentage of matrix contraction due to knockdown of integrins by siRNA in stromal fibroblasts (Table 4).
Since VEGF121 is unable to bind to GAG chains in the extracellular matrix and basement membranes, the percentage of matrix-bound VEGF decreases as more VEGF121 is secreted.
During growth and maturation, the IVD expands and the NP becomes more fibrous as the cellular niche is altered to include a greater percentage of matrix, increased hypoxia and reduced nutrient transport [ 3].

Also, our group (Lopez-Franco et al., 2016) observed a smaller percentage of immunostained matrix and a diminished number of positive nuclei against COMP in menisci from OA knees, compared to samples from partial meniscectomy (Fig. 5).

Taking the chemical reaction during plasma treatment and after air exposure into accont, the break of C F bond by plasma bombardment might reduce the mass percentage of PTFE matrix decomposing in region III, while the generation of oxidation species of PTFE in air environment might increase the mass percentage of chemicals decomposed in region IV.
