Google posted third quarter earnings after the bell on Thursday, showing net profit of $2.2 billion and earnings per share of $7.64, excluding one-time items.
By posting bids and offers for the same securities simultaneously, they are able to scoop up a spread of a tenth or a hundredth of a penny per share thousands of times a day while limiting the capital at risk.
Google reported earnings per share of $1.29, more than five times earnings in the year-ago period.
That means a loss per share of $1.36, more than three times worse than analysts' mean estimate of a loss of $0.40 a share.
