Raising or lowering this penalty selects for local or global alignments, respectively, but neither option favors overlapping alignments specifically.
The relative prediction performance of LASSO and Ridge regression depends on the sparsity of true positive variables, as the LASSO penalty selects no more variables than there are samples, and tends to select a single representative from a group of correlated variables (Zou and Hastie, 2005).
