In partnership with academia, NGOs, and the government, UNICEF contributed to the development and introduction of modules for pre-and in-service training for teachers on child-centred education in all pedagogical faculties.
While there have been sweeping calls for the development and use of CUREs (Karukstis, 2008; AAAS, 2011; Kloser, 2011; PCAST, 2012), there has been relatively little study of the practical and pedagogical issues faculty face in developing research-based courses or of the kinds of support systems/best practices that could help facilitate the change to a CURE-based STEM curriculum.
Recognising that the quality of the student experience is highly dependent on the pedagogical approach and faculty knowledge of patient safety, study participants raised concerns about the extent to which current faculty members and clinical preceptors are adequately prepared to teach and mentor in the area of patient safety.
Lund and Stains (2015) also documented supportive influences to the adoption of EBIPs, such as prior pedagogical experiences and faculty's personal teaching attitudes and beliefs.
Then we highlight strategies that recipients of feedback may borrow from existing programs facilitating pedagogical change and faculty development.
In particular, the tensions between a scientist's professional identity and the call for faculty pedagogical change are rarely, if ever, raised as a key impediment to widespread biology education reform.
Given the tension points described above, professional identity may not be just one additional barrier to faculty pedagogical change; it could be hypothesized to be a key underlying reason why change strategies addressing training, time, and incentives have to date had only limited success in engaging broad groups of faculty in widespread biology education reform.
Finally, there is clearly a need for much more empirical research on all the potential barriers to faculty pedagogical change, but especially on the role of professional identity in determining whether a scientist chooses to participate in biology education reform efforts.
Skopje, 18 April 2011: Over the next three days Ministry of Education and Science representatives and professionals from pedagogical and psychological faculties and institutes, as well as UNICEF staff from Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Uzbekistan and Kosovo will join their peers in Skopje to take part in a UNICEF conference on Developing Standards for Quality Basic Education.
