The New York Times has launched its much anticipated digital payment subscription, a metered system that essentially targets heavy users of NYT content, an ambitious and gutsy move by the largest newspaper Web site in America.
"We're looking, of course, at ways to extract payments from the consumers of our news — micro-payments, subscriptions, memberships, licensing, even voluntary donations," Bill Keller, executive editor of The Times, said last week in a speech at Stanford University.
Many of those proceeds will involve a range of flexible billing options, including traditional up-front payments, subscriptions and consumption-based recurring payment schemes.
