Morgan Stanley expects India's digital payments penetration to increase from 5percenttodayay to 20percentt, and the e-commerce market to reach $200 billion, with 475 million e-commerce shoppers, adding up to a GDP upwards of $6 trillion — all by 2027.
Working in emerging markets, payment card penetration is not especially high, so foodpanda is trying to come up with alternative ways of helping people pay for their food that are potentially more secure than simply taking cash on delivery.
Uber has also been using the region to test out a number of other initiatives like cash payments to supplement rides paid for through the app — a smart move, considering that payment card penetration in India is significantly lower than in the developed markets where Uber operates.

That's because in these areas there is significantly lower payment card penetration; so the huge wave of consumers in countries like Brazil, Russia, India and elsewhere that are now turning to smartphones as their primary means of accessing the internet effectively need a different way to pay for content.
In emerging markets around the world, payment card penetration, and often bank account ownership, is a lot lower, so to grow more app business there — and by default your bigger ecosystem as a hardware maker, and of course phone sales — we often see carrier billing get used as a more significant component in the mix.
These findings will enable a better correlation between TBM performance and geological conditions for use in TBM design, as a basis for contractual payments where penetration rate dominates the excavation cycle and in further academic investigations into the TBM excavation process.
Emerging markets like Latin America that have become a big target for carrier billing services, because of the low penetration of payment cards — credit and debit — among consumers.
Services like these mean more seamless payments because they do not require users to enter credit card details, which can be painful to do on handsets and in some markets are a dead end because of the low penetration of payment cards.
Despite solid Internet penetration, most payments in the 180 million-person country of Nigeria are done offline.
