AFTER riding a tram in Strasbourg, Matt Yglesias, a blogger with Slate, has decided that proof-of-payment fare-collection systems in which fares are enforced by inspectors who levy steep fines when they catch you without a proper ticket are better than pay-per-ride systems for public transport.
It says in part: "No person shall use or enter the facilities or conveyances of the authority, for any purpose, without the payment of fare or tender of other valid fare media used in accordance with any conditions and restrictions imposed by the authority".
The test is intended to "evaluate the potential of contactless payments to simplify fare payment for customers," said Peter S. Kalikow, the authority's chairman.
For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills.
