Participating individuals were guided through a program called SUBGAP, which stands for (I) Seeing unconscious patterns that contribute to emotional difficulties, (II) Understanding these patterns, (III) Breaking such unhelpful patterns, and (IV) Guarding Against Patterns and/or relapses in the future.
In contrast pattern III and IV reveal marked oligodendropathology. Here, pattern III lesions show signs of a distal oligodendrogliopathy with detection of apoptotic oligodendrocytes, and a distinct loss of MAG or CNPase.
Intercalated cells with patterns I and II were predominant in the cortex, while cells with patterns III and IV were most common at the corticomedullary junction.
For the metabolites in patterns I and IV, the treatment of CTPsyn inhibition strongly influenced their levels compared to the control while the mutants with CTPsyn overexpression have no difference compared to the control.

In contrast, it is difficult to explain patterns (i), (ii), and (iv) with this classical view.
Patterns II, III and IV were not observed in any IBM cases.
Caenorhabditis elegans posed an exception against the patterns (i), (ii), and (iv), which will be discussed later.
