On the other hand, nitrogen exists in a multitude of oxidation states and, consequently, nitrogen compounds (NCs) serve as electron donor and/or acceptors in many catabolic pathways including various forms of microbial respiration that contribute to the global biogeochemical nitrogen cycle.
