On a microbial level, the team was surprised to discover that a majority of childhood MDS cases were caused by only four pathogens: rotavirus (pictured), the parasite Cryptosporidium, a strain of the Escherichia coli bacteria known as ST-ETEC, and the bacteria Shigella.
