Coye will study socio-technical systems and social participation by investigating how system design, structure and agency are associated with different paths to participation in technology-mediated social participation (TMSP) systems.
BCNM Graduate Adviser and Berkeley School of Information Associate Professor Coye Cheshire was awarded a $207,000 grant by the National Science Foundation for his project "Agency, Structure, and Organization: Paths to Participation in Large-Scale Socio-Technical Systems". He will be the Principal Investigator in this study.
Chapters focus on the historic mass protests against the anti-immigrant Sensenbrenner Bill; coverage of police brutality against peaceful activists; efforts to widen access to digital media tools and skills for low-wage immigrant workers; paths to participation in DREAM activism; and the implications of professionalism for transmedia organizing.
"Only then can we can start talking about equal access to proper education, employment with no discrimination and stigma," he says, "and the path to meaningful participation in national development".
The more people feel the path to democratic participations is blocked, as ignominiously demonstrated by this disgraceful coup and ensuing bloodbath, the more they are likely to regard the force and violence as the only available medium to affect change in politics and to rise to power in the region.
The report urges world leaders to "discuss how they can embrace a broad-based digital financial system as a path to growth, greater participation of women in the economy, and greater access to payments, including remittances".
