"I traveled to Wisconsin from D.C. and my suitcase was delayed," said David Stempler, president of the Air Travelers Association, a passenger representatives group.
This would also offer the opportunity to improve accountability with, for example, passenger representatives, Transport for London and local authorities all taking their place on a joint management board.
"Airline passenger representatives have been effectively barred from testifying on the airline and airport proposals to privatize air traffic control, abolish the TSA and return to private pre-9/11 security, wholesale FAA delegation of safety regulation to the industry and repeal the few DOT consumer protection regulations".
But, as ever, a passengers' representative will not be present.
"This is like the captain and the crew of the ship reserving the lifeboats saying to hell with the passengers," Representative Stephen F. Lynch, Democrat of Massachusetts, said.
With the cynicism for which they are now famed, they seem ready to take the money and let the public suffer, though a passengers' representative claimed on the radio yesterday morning that most people would rather travel in discomfort than not travel at all.
"We're here today because this administration has decided to put politics over passengers," said Representative Rodney Davis, a freshman Republican from Illinois, who said the administration already had the flexibility to save the air traffic controllers.
"I have reports that would curl your hair about what gets past passenger screening," said Representative John L. Mica, the Florida Republican who is chairman of the aviation subcommittee and a sponsor of the bill.
