By providing evidence with a greater appearance of objectivity than informal controls can yield, action and result controls improve partners' perception of each other's trustworthiness, and build competence and goodwill-based trust.
The administered questionnaire asked about: age, sex, and educational status; condom use with regular and non-regular partners; number of sexual partners; perception of personal HIV risk; HIV testing in the last 12 months, intention to have an HIV test; and experience of intimate partner violence in the last 12 months (see Additional file 1: Questionnaire).
