The beam test for the prototype RPC was performed at the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) in CERN with a particle rate ranging up to ∼700 Hz/cm2.

These effects are studied in this contribution, with an emphasis on gain variations during operation at high particle rate and under heavy ionisation.

The particle rate was approximately 6 kHz/mm2, distributed over the whole active area of the detectors, and this rate was maintained for a total integrated time of 493 h.

The test beam provided charged particle rates up to 108cm−2s−1 over the full module area.

The increase in luminosity poses new challenges to the detector operation, both in terms of instantaneous and integrated particle rates.

Due to increased luminosity, a severe radiation dose and high particle rates will occur for the experiments.

With the expected increase in particle rates, the electronic readout chain will be changed for fast digital signals.

In parallel, modelling studies using GEANT4 and GRAS suites were performed to identify products of the interaction and predict ultimate fluxes and particle rates at the MCP detector.
