The Metal A and Metal B sites bind magnesium ions that guide free nucleoside triphosphates into the active site for RNA synthesis, stabilize the transition state of the growing RNA chain and participate in transcript cleavage events during polymerase backtracking, a process which helps prevent polymerase arrest at pause sites [17], [18].
